Today I'm taking you to idyllic rural Somerset to discover an absolutely gorgeous exclusive wedding venue. Pennard House is a beautiful Grade II listed manor house set within 130 acres of meadows, woodlands and apple orchards. A family-owned country estate, with a working cider farm on-site, it's the perfect place to hold a luxurious country wedding that still feels uniquely you.
Although Pennard House absolutely epitomises English country elegance, the vibe here is all about relaxed, informal, personal weddings. This isn't a wedding factory - they don't do back to back weddings and you have exclusive use, so your family and friends can take over the entire house and gardens for a whole weekend and make yourself right at home in these stunning surroundings. It's a beautiful, luxurious blank canvas that you can really make your own.
The experienced team at Pennard House will work with you as you plan your wedding (you can meet them on-site as many times as you like) and are incredibly flexible. I love their focus on creating personal, unique weddings that are all about YOU. They really understand what's important to couples and go out of their way to make your vision a reality.
So, let's have a little look around. There are various spaces which you will have access to for your wedding. The main house is an elegant Georgian manor house surrounded by secluded gardens. There are 9 beautifully decorated bedrooms which you will have access to, including the spectacular Orchard Bridal Suite, which is complimentary on your wedding night. With huge sash windows overlooking the gardens and flooding the room with light, chandeliers and a gorgeous roll-top bath in the bedroom (possibly my favourite thing ever and most-pinned interiors detail!), it's the perfect place to get ready on your wedding morning and to spend your first night as a married couple. Seriously, you won't want to leave! The other 8 bedrooms are for your family and wedding party, so you can really spend the weekend in a little bubble of wedding joy surrounded by the people you love.
Also in the main house, there is a lovely, bright room which is licensed for civil ceremonies and can hold up to 90 guests, which is the perfect choice for an elegant, indoor ceremony. If you prefer an outdoor ceremony you can use the Garden Pavilion which is on the lawn just next to the main house and is also licensed for civil ceremonies, with a seated capacity of 120 guests. In a great example of the flexibility on offer here, you can choose which of these two spaces to use on the day - so you don't have to worry about that pesky British weather!
If you want to have a church ceremony then you don't have to worry about arranging transport to the reception venue, as there's a 14th century church in the gardens! The Church of All Saints is a really picturesque, traditional village church and it's literally just across the garden, with a capacity of 120 seated guests. After your ceremony, you and your guests can just stroll across the lawn to be greeted with a glass of champagne as the church bells ring out across the countryside. How idyllic?!
Finally, if you're having a Humanist ceremony then the world really is your oyster. Why not say your vows on the banks of the freshwater lake, in the fragrant rose gardens or in amongst the cider orchards? You can really go to town planning the most beautiful, natural, personal wedding ceremony in any of the amazing spaces around the grounds.
Whichever kind of ceremony you choose, after you say your vows you can mingle with your guests in the garden, on the terrace or by the Victorian swimming pond as you sip champagne and caterers serve delicious canapés. This is also the perfect time to get some stunning photographs - seriously, your photographer is going to LOVE you for booking this venue!
Then it's time for dinner and dancing. The lovingly restored 18th Century Coach House is the ideal spot for a wedding reception. It's a great blank canvas which you can style however you want to create a really beautiful, personal space. With lovely original features, atmospheric lighting, a bar, loos, a dancefloor and state-of-the-art sound system, it's the perfect place for a great party. For your wedding breakfast, the open dining area comfortably seats 120 guests. If you were thinking of having any evening guests, The Coach House can hold a maximum number of 180, so another 60 people can join in for the party!
Food is something Pennard House take very seriously and they work with four brilliant local caterers (all of whom also come highly recommended by The Wedding A-List!). They all work with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and can design bespoke menus to suit any budget. Whether you fancy an elegant three course dinner, a lavish sharing feast, a rustic hog roast or a fresh summer buffet, the teams at Caroline Gent Catering, The French Kitchen, Taste Somerset or Wild Fork West can make it happen. They tailor make your menu to suit your tailor-made wedding at Pennard!
When it comes to drinks, you can bring your own for the drinks reception and wedding breakfast with (hallelujah!) no corkage to pay, just a small handling fee to cover cooling, serving and disposing of the empties. Alternatively, Pennard House can organise this for you and provide a choice of wine and sparkling wine on a sale or return basis. In the evening they run a fully stocked cash bar and they can also organise some local specialities for you, such as local cider or ale, or their signature cider brandy aperitif (which sounds delicious and wonderfully boozy!)
As the party winds down, there are plenty of lovely local hotels, B&Bs and cottages for your guests to stay in, but for something really special there are also 2 amazing tipis on-site. Complete with comfy beds, cotton linen and cost quilts and duvets, they are the perfect place for a few special guests to glamp under the stars and then join you in the morning for a hearty homemade breakfast in the main house.
If you like the sound of the tipis (and who wouldn’t?), it's also worth mentioning that you can have a full festival wedding at Pennard House. Located just a 10 minute walk from Worthy Farm, the home of Glastonbury, a Pennard House festival wedding with tipis and tents dotted around the garden and beautiful bell tents set up in the orchard for your evening reception is perfect for music lovers!
As I mentioned, you can really plan a whole wedding weekend at Pennard House and the team will go out of their way to make every day truly special. If you book to stay the night before your wedding, they can also organise an intimate drinks and dinner do in the drawing room and dining room, so you can really relax with your closest family and friends the night before the wedding, before waking up in that gorgeous Bridal Suite for a long soak in the roll-top bath and a relaxing morning of pampering. The day after your wedding, why not get your guests back to Pennard House for a chilled BBQ and hair-of-the-dog Bloody Marys around the freshwater pool - if you're feeling energetic you can even jump in for a swim!
A traditional English manor house with idyllic grounds and gardens, but with a refreshingly modern, flexible approach to weddings - Pennard House really is the perfect choice for a gorgeous Somerset country wedding.
